Appreciative Coaching®: A Positive Process for Change

“The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.”

William James (1842-1910)

William James, a leading American psychologist, philosopher and physician living into the early 20th century, felt strongly that humans had an inner process that directed them and the choices they made. This was a revolutionary concept at a time when scientific thought viewed humans as machine-like and only capable of being changed through external efforts. The brilliance of James was to reconceive the human mind as inherently purposive and selective — from within.

  • Coaching for individuals, intact groups and leadership/ management teams that are organized around a particular goal or purpose (onsite or virtual).

Appreciative Coaching® Services for Executives & Businesses

My coaching and consulting services are based on an ‘appreciative’ approach, which means looking at clients from a positive and life-enhancing perspective rather than viewing them in limited or problem-oriented ways. Such a perspective can create dramatic new results by linking thoughts and actions to outcomes.

My services include executive and corporate coaching, small and family business coaching, and life coaching for individuals and professionals.

I can help in multiple ways:

  • Support for individuals in releasing limiting thought and communication patterns to more effectively access their unique strengths, talents and assets.

  • Strategizing on ways to successfully navigate the complexities, ambiguity and politics of organization life.

The Science and Art of Appreciative Coaching®

Over the past 35+ years, a science of positive human change has emerged which reflects the tremendous shift that has been occurring, from viewing people in mechanistic, limited and problem-oriented ways to seeing them as dynamic, energy-based beings in continual process. Our lives are embodied in energy and movement and we have the capacity to reinterpret and find meaning in our lives.

Appreciative Coaching® provides the science and practices for triggering new inner connections of understanding. The scientific and philosophical base of Appreciative Coaching® is founded on multiple perspectives: Social Constructionism, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy/Coaching, Appreciative Inquiry, Positive Organizational Scholarship, Positive Psychology, and the new science of Positive Emotions.

The Five Principles of Appreciative Coaching®

The core assumptions of the science and philosophy of Appreciative Inquiry/Appreciative Coaching® are deeply embedded in five clearly defined principles.

The Art of Appreciative Coaching®: the Four Stages

Appreciative Coaching® occurs in four main stages that are dynamic and interrelated. At the model’s center is identifying the topic for the coaching engagement (in positive or neutral language to avoid slipping into problem-solving). The stages are sequential, iterative and interrelated.

  • An amazing talent to explore and focus on positive human change.

“Through highly documented research, she teaches coaches to understand how they can directly impact their clients by having them become aware that they are not objects to be fixed but dynamic energy-based beings in continual development. A stimulating reframing of our beliefs which shows how positive emotions trigger upward spirals including the willingness and capacity for change.”

  • I wouldn’t be where I am...

“I felt so lost and trapped when I first started working with Ann, but she helped me to see that I have great strengths that do translate into different professional settings. I believe I have finally found a sector of the retail industry where I can excel and that is much more of a natural fit for me. It makes everything else in my non-professional life even feel infinitely better. Thanks for your work and guidance. I wouldn’t be where I am now without your help.”

  • Outstanding coach and teacher!

“I hope your work continues to be rewarding and joyfully challenging. You are so great at what you do, Ann. Your wisdom, compassion, intellect, and spirit make you an outstanding coach and teacher!”

  • So grateful...

“I give Ann so much credit for helping me become who I am. I still have my five words of what success looks like to me on a sticky note posted on my bulletin board. I reference it often and am so grateful for our time together. “

  • A strong resource in my strategic planning and problem-solving

“Though Ann's credentials and professionalism are what initially struck me, I have found her a strong resource in my strategic planning and problem-solving issues. Her ability to listen, offer perspective and even healthy nudging occasionally is very effective to accelerate progress in both my personal and my professional endeavors."

  • Talented, patient, insightful, kind and tenacious

“Working with Ann has helped me reclaim control of my life—which now evolves more by design than default. I was successful—writing books, happy clients, financial security—but I wasn’t happy. I was too exhausted to be happy. I didn’t have time to be happy. I didn’t need someone to enhance my over-achiever drive. I needed someone to enhance my ability to live a sane life, a happy life. Ann adapted immediately to my special needs. Sometimes my action items are “go horseback riding” or “get a massage.” What is amazing is how much my business continues to improve. My clients like me better when I’m relaxed! Who knew? (smile) Ann is talented, patient, insightful, kind and tenacious. Everything I need in a coach.”
