The
art and practice of facilitation is about a process in which
a facilitator (or process guide) makes a process easier,
more convenient and more powerful by tapping into the tremendous
power in groups and teams for creating synergy and productive
action. Facilitation is about moving a group or team to
an agreed destination. Professional facilitation helps members
align themselves around a shared purpose, set realistic
goals, and identify clear action items.
The
core belief around group facilitation is that full cooperation
between people is both possible and desirable. This cooperation
implies values of quality, shared decision-making, equal
opportunity, power sharing and personal responsibility.
The role of the facilitator is to guide a group of people
through cooperative processes, including collective decision-making,
so that the group can fulfill its purpose as easily as possible.
One
of the basic components of successful community building
is facilitating grass roots efforts so that citizens build
their capacity to develop and sustain strong relationships,
increase their problem-solving and group decision-making
skills, and learn to collaborate around a common goal or
vision.
